In India, only 35 percent of students enrolled in grade 1 make it to grade 12. In addition, international tests like PISA show that learning levels of secondary school students remain disappointingly low.

We are looking to identify and partner with education companies and NGOs that have relevant experience in secondary education (grades 9-12). Your offering could span a wide range of interventions including teacher training, assessment strategies and effective use of technology in secondary education.

Through these collaborations, our goal is to build an evidence-based understanding of different interventions and arrive at a blueprint for quality improvement in secondary education for the country.

THE SECONDARY EDUCATION
CHALLENGE IN INDIA

BUILDING MODELS FOR IMPACT

The foundation for a child’s education needs to be developed early to reduce learning gaps that can widen as curriculum in higher grades becomes more complex.

The need for improvements in secondary education are critical. The lives of children in India will only be transformed if they are completing school education with higher competency levels.

Since 2006, the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation has partnered with more than 40 organisations working in the elementary education space. We have supported states like Haryana, Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh in transforming their education systems to ensure students are learning at grade level. Several of our partner NGOs are now scaling through pay-for-performance platforms like Development Impact Bonds (DIBs) and our EdTech investments in companies like Convegenius and IMAX are actively leveraging our learnings in the sector.

We are now looking to address the secondary education challenge and achieve a step change in learning outcomes for this segment.

SEEKING SOLUTIONS TO
THE MOST COMMON CHALLENGES

There are several challenges that need to be addressed in order to improve learning outcomes in secondary grades. Potential ways to overcome these challenges include:

• Addressing learning gaps from previous grades through remedial education

• More practice-based preparation for board exams

• Teacher enablement through training programs

• Data-led decision making based on student performance data
