Everywhere in the world, education can make the difference between a lifetime of poverty and middle class stability. Nowhere is this truer than in India, where explosive economic growth offers a concrete chance at upward mobility.

But in the country’s urban slums, just making it to class isn’t enough. India’s government has made great strides in opening access to schools, but quality and consistency remain challenging. Many impoverished students struggle to master grade-level proficiency in critical basics like linguistics and math.

To help address the issue, we fund programs that improve educational quality, consistency and outcomes in India’s urban schools. Our investments promote better teaching processes, improved leadership and teacher capabilities, and more sustainable school operations. 

We also work with third-party industry experts to evaluate the success of these efforts. Objective evaluation of student data enables our grantees to better understand which efforts are working and which aren’t, so they can then improve their programs and drive better practices throughout schools, and better results for every child.

Moreover, these efforts help drive systemic change: By collaborating with other organizations doing similar work, we can better support governmental efforts to introduce continuous and comprehensive evaluation standards that improve the quality of education.
