Transforming the lives of children living in
urban poverty through better health and education

Childhood Obesity Prevention & Wellness

In a world that sometimes seems to thwart healthy behavior at every turn, the biggest problem for many families, especially those in poor communities, is balance: Time constraints outweigh the need for physical activity; convenience outweighs nutrition; safety concerns outweigh the need for outdoor activity.

This ‘new normal’ can be life-threatening. Many believe this current generation of young people, one-third of whom are overweight or obese, will be the first in American history to live shorter lives than their parents.

We’re working to restore balance and healthy living through programs that help promote childhood wellness and prevent problems before they start. Working with grantees and partners we promote effective, sustainable and scalable childhood obesity prevention strategies that:

  • Increase children’s knowledge about the benefits of good nutrition and exercise
  • Improve children’s attitudes about eating well and exercising
  • Promote healthy behaviors
  • Give children and families increased access to nutritious foods and to safe places to engage in activity

We also work to connect our grantees and community stakeholders so they can share knowledge, research and best practices.

And on an ongoing basis, we measure and evaluate results, and work with our grantees to refine projects and strategies as needed.
