Transforming the lives of children living in
urban poverty through better health and education

Orphaned and Vulnerable Children

HIV/AIDS is ravaging South Africa’s families and has rendered millions of children vulnerable or orphaned. Approximately half the country’s orphans have lost their parents to AIDS. Meanwhile, the nation has the biggest pediatric HIV pandemic in the world.  And estimated 1.9 million children in South Africa have lost one or both parents to AIDS related illnesses.

The Dell family foundation works to reduce the impact of the disease at every level, while also investigating innovative options for greater systemic impact. We fund organizations that:

  • Reduce the prevalence of mother-to-child transmissions of HIV and AIDS
  • Reduce the risk of early death
  • Mitigate the health impacts of HIV and increase educational opportunities by reducing illness-based absences
  • Reduce rates of child abuse, neglect and exploitation
  • Provide support for orphaned and vulnerable children
STRATEGY

We fund high-quality and innovative organizations that improve the health of people with HIV, that provide support for orphaned and vulnerable children, and that work to reduce the prevalence of mother-to-child transmissions of HIV and AIDS.
