Almost a million Californians live in food deserts – neighborhoods that lack supermarkets or large grocery stores where fresh produce is easily accessible. The Northern California city of Oakland, which sits just across the Bay from San Francisco, is one such city.

Dell Scholars, on average, have an ACT score of 19 and an SAT of 1400. (The maximum scores for these tests are 36 and 2400, respectively.) Judging from those test scores alone, you might not have much hope that these students could be successful in college.

In my family, we’ve always shown love through food. When we are joyful, we make food. When we want to show sadness or anger or sorrow, we make food. And in my culture, we traditionally make a lot of foods that are high in fat with lard.
