Dell Scholar Comes Full Circle

Ana Vargas never let challenges slow her down, at least not for long. The 2005 Dell Scholar, who worked hard to overcome financial and early language barriers, enjoyed college life at the University of California at Santa Barbara.

Ana’s parents, who emigrated from Mexico when Ana was six months old, had always emphasized the importance of education to get ahead. Ana joined the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Program, a college prep class, in her freshman year. Her experiences there changed her life.

The $20,000 in financial assistance from Dell Scholars made it possible for her to earn her Bachelor’s Degree in September 2007. She received not only scholarship funding, but also tools, including a laptop, and personal encouragement and support she needed to get her degree. Dell Scholars is also working with her to use the balance of her funding toward her masters degree. She is currently a graduate student majoring in Criminal Justice (MS) at California State University, Stanislaus.

With each class of Dell Scholars receiving four-year degrees, the success of the program is evident in its direct impact: providing college education opportunities for highly motivated students who because of lower academic performance may not have had access to other resources or the motivational support needed to graduate.

Ana’s parents are proud of everything she has accomplished, and Ana is proud of herself, still pushing to get further.
