EXCEL High School: Improving the Educational Experience for Students in Oakland, California
Thirteen million children are considered to be at or below the poverty level in the US and only half of them will graduate high school. At EXCEL High School in Oakland, Calif., nearly 51 percent of students are considered to be at a socio-economic disadvantage. All children, regardless of ethnicity or economic circumstances, deserve access to high-quality public education and EXCEL High School strives to meet this need.
EXCEL High School was founded in 2005 to improve the educational experience for students in the Oakland, California area. At EXCEL, every student is given the tools and preparation to attend and succeed at a two or four year college. For many of these students, the path to graduation seemed unattainable. Now, these same teenagers believe that they too can attend college and succeed in life. Specialized offerings at the school include small classes, SAT prep and AP courses, and student evaluations based on content mastery.
EXCEL strives to develop young adults who contribute to the community through service and activism, as well as serve as role models for the younger generation. The Michael & Susan Dell Foundation supports EXCEL through a grant for a performance management system.
