Academy for Urban School Leadership Prepares Teachers to Transform Underperforming Chicago Schools
Since its founding in 2001, the Academy for Urban School Leadership (AUSL) has expanded both its scope and its impact on the Chicago Public School system. What began primarily as a teacher training academy is now a comprehensive program focused on turning around Chicago’s chronically underperforming schools.
In the first five years of its teacher residency program, AUSL’s accomplishments are impressive. The organization has trained a total of 191 new teachers, who now serve more than 5,000 low-income Chicago Public School children. And, those teachers are staying. AUSL is maintaining retention rate of 91 percent, compared to a national average of 50 percent.
AUSL continues to work in partnership with the Chicago Public School system to open additional Turnaround Schools and to offer additional training academies. Based on the success of its first two Turnaround Schools, AUSL plans to replicate those achievements inside Chicago’s historically low-performing schools in order to provide high-quality education for children in low-income areas.
