Austin Children’s Shelter and the S.A.F.E. Program Provide Support for Children in Crisis
For many years, the demand for Austin Children’s Shelter (ACS) services has exceeded the organization’s resources and ACS was often forced to turn away as many abused and neglected children as it served.
But, with support from the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation and other donors, ACS broke ground in February, 2008 on a new facility which will allow the shelter to reach beyond emergency care and provide longer-term care. When completed in 2009, the new campus will accommodate 93 percent more children than its current facilities allow.
ACS provides for the basic needs of the children in its care through the S.A.F.E. program. These needs include accommodations in a homelike facility with 24-hour supervised care, balanced meals, healthy snacks, nutritional supplements, clothing and personal care items.
