Family Economic Stability
Our focus on promoting family economic stability is an opportunity to make a real difference in the current and future quality of life for a significant number of children. For example, a $100 loan can open a small enterprise and raise a family’s income above the average $2-a-day poverty level; enabling them to afford not only daily necessities, but primary education and basic health care for their children as well.
Currently, our efforts concentrate on the urban slums of India with a commitment of more than $7 million to help evolve scaleable solutions that are delivering basic social services and access to a range of financial services. We are working with our partners to increase the number of high-caliber Microfinance Institutions (MFI) in urban communities and the diversity of their services including micro-loans; credit, transfer and savings services; micro-insurance; and financing for low-cost housing.
Additionally, we are supporting global initiatives for the roll-out of the Progress Out of Poverty Index (PPI), creating a common system to measure social progress and evaluate the effectiveness of microfinance.

Progress Out of Poverty Index (PPI)
The Michael & Susan Dell Foundation is supporting global initiatives for the roll-out of a common Progress Out of Poverty Index (PPI) to systematically track and measure social performance indicators. The index would provide a consistent standard for determining the effectiveness of microfinance in changing people’s lives.
