IDEA Academy Named Top Public Middle School in State of Texas
December 8, 2005
On Tuesday, December 6, IDEA Academy was named to the Texas Honor Roll by the Texas Business and Education Coalition (TBEC) and the Just for the Kids Foundation. A designation as an Honor Roll school is recognition of consistently high student achievement for three consecutive years. The Honor Roll schools are the most consistent performers in educating all student groups over a three-year period of time and rank highest in their individual peer groups, which are the schools across the state that most closely approximate their size and student population makeup. Of the 1,700 middle schools eligible, only 31 were named to the Texas Honor Roll, representing 1.7% of all Texas middle schools. The award will be presented to faculty and students at a school assembly on Friday, December 16, 2005 at 12:30 p.m.
IDEA Public Schools is the only kindergarten through high school public charter school system in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) offering students a college preparatory education. Conceived in 2000 by a dedicated group of students, parents, and teachers, IDEA has grown to serve nearly 1,000 students in primary through high school. In its brief history, IDEA has quickly become one of the highest achieving charter schools in the nation, and consistently outperforms state and district averages on objective measures of student achievement.
IDEA’s mission is to prepare students from low-income homes for success in the four-year college or university of their choice. We do this through a high-quality, focused approach to teaching and learning that is derived from the rigorous International Baccalaureate model, a unique and powerful school culture, a small school size, and a partnership with parents. A key component of our success is our extended school day and year, ensuring an uncommon depth and breadth of academic and extra-curricular offerings. With more time on task, higher expectations for student achievement, and a campus culture that rewards achievement, IDEA students have closed the achievement gap.
Students at IDEA attend school until 5:00 p.m. each day, for an extended summer session, and on select Saturdays. As a college preparatory school, award of the high school diploma requires the completion of a rigorous course of study and acceptance to a four-year college or university.
