Dell Scholars Program Launched
March 26, 2004
The Michael & Susan Dell Foundation launched the Dell Scholars program to help students achieve their greatest potential through higher education. The Dell Scholars program seeks to make the dream of higher education possible for students who continue to overcome obstacles in their academic and personal performance.
The 2004 launch of the Dell Scholars program corresponds to the Foundation’s current education initiatives that prepare students for higher education through college readiness programs, such as AVID. AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is designed to increase school-wide learning and performance, and its mission is to prepare students who have not been high academic performers for honors and AP courses and college work.
“We recognize that a student’s determination to succeed is one of the greatest indicators of future success,” said Susan Dell. “We created this scholarship to encourage students who have long range goals but mid range GPAs and a demonstrated ability to overcome obstacles.”
Qualifications for scholarship include graduating from an accredited high school, being Federal Pell Grant eligible, participating in an approved AVID program for a minimum of two years, earning a minimum of an unweighted 2.4 on a 4.0 GPA scale, planning to enter a bachelor's degree program at an accredited higher education institution in the fall of 2004 with U.S. citizenship or permanent residency status required. The deadline for applying is May 1, 2004.
