Founder's Message

Today’s reality is that millions of children around the world are living in urban poverty and face daily challenges in education and health that threaten their minds, bodies and hopes.

The family foundation Michael and I started in 1999 is dedicated to improving the lives of these disadvantaged children. Our goal is transformation; enabling meaningful changes to transform their lives and futures. We have focused our grant portfolio on education and health; areas we believe are essential for children to emerge from poverty as healthy, productive adults.

Tackling school performance and childhood obesity issues in the U.S.
We believe all children are capable of learning and achieving at high levels and deserve a high-quality public education, regardless of their background, location or economic means. In the U.S., we concentrate on transforming public school systems into high-performing organizations through the use of data-driven decision-making, strong school leadership and innovative models for success. We are also investing in healthy family and school environments that balance fuel and fun with good nutrition and physical activity and involve the child, parent and community in reducing the alarming obesity trends among our nation’s children and improve and sustain their lives.

Improving life for children living in India’s urban slums
Internationally, our concentration is on India, where more than 30% of India’s 400 million children live in extreme poverty. These children deserve access to quality education, basic healthcare, clean water sources and adequate sanitation. Our grant portfolio attempts to address issues as well as working to improve family economic security by expanding the number of high-caliber microfinance institutions. Access to credit, financial services, and micro-loans as small as a few hundred dollars can stimulate entrepreneurial ambitions and stabilize and grow family incomes to help break the cycle of poverty; ensuring a healthier, more educated outlook for these children.

Offering our community children the best chance at a bright future
Children in Central Texas also deserve equal access to opportunities, safety and health. Improving opportunities in our home community is dependent upon closing the achievement gap and better preparing our students for college and the workforce. We also seek to ensure we have the best resources in Central Texas for pediatric health research, children’s healthcare, and services for neglected and abused children.

Regardless of geographic focus, the mission is still the same…improving the lives of children living in urban poverty and offering them the best chance at a successful future.
